Vehicle Maintenance

Basic maintenance every driver can understand

You do not need to be a mechanic to stay on top of maintenance. Understanding the basics helps you plan service, ask better questions, and keep accurate records.

Oil change schedules

Many modern vehicles use synthetic oil with longer intervals than older guidance suggested. Your owner handbook lists the interval for normal and severe driving conditions. Short trips, towing, dusty roads, and extreme temperatures often count as severe.

  • Follow the interval in your owner handbook rather than a generic number.
  • Check the oil level with the dipstick or onboard monitor between changes.
  • Record each change with date, mileage, and oil type.

Tire care

Tires affect braking, handling, and fuel efficiency. A few minutes each month makes a meaningful difference.

  • Check pressure when tires are cold, using the number on the door jamb placard.
  • Use the coin test or tread wear bars to gauge remaining tread.
  • Rotate tires at the interval your handbook recommends to promote even wear.
  • Look for bulges, cracks, or embedded objects.

Dashboard warning light reference

Warning lights are generally color coded. Red often signals a condition that needs prompt attention, amber or yellow suggests service soon, and green or blue indicates a system is active. Always confirm meanings in your owner handbook.

  • Oil pressure: pull over safely and check your handbook before continuing.
  • Engine temperature: stop and allow the engine to cool.
  • Check engine: schedule a diagnostic check; a flashing light is more urgent.
  • Tire pressure monitor: check and adjust tire pressures.
  • Battery or charging: have the charging system inspected soon.

Maintenance record organizer

A clear service history helps you track what is due next and supports the value of your vehicle if you sell it. Keep one log with the date, odometer reading, service performed, shop name, and cost.
