Document Organizer

Organize the documents that come with your vehicle

When paperwork is organized, renewals and service visits are easier. Use this checklist to gather what you have and decide where each item lives.

Digital document checklist

Keep originals in a safe place at home and copies where you need them.

  • Vehicle title or lienholder information, stored securely at home.
  • Current registration, kept in the vehicle as your state requires.
  • Proof of coverage document you already hold, kept where your state requires it.
  • Owner handbook and warranty booklet.
  • Service receipts and maintenance log.
  • Purchase or lease paperwork.

Vehicle registration preparation

Registration rules and renewal periods vary by state. Check your state motor vehicle agency website for current requirements, note your renewal date in a calendar, and gather any inspection or emissions paperwork your state requires ahead of time.

Building a simple filing system

A single folder, physical or digital, with clear labels works for most drivers. Name files with the date and a short description, such as the service performed, so records are easy to search later.
